Gilbert R. Matson, 64, Orofino woodsworker
OROFINO - Gilbert R. Matson, 64, a retired woodsworker, died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack while he was camping near Sousie Creek Campground in the Canyon Ranger District.
Matson retired in 1982 after working for 40 years as a logger and equipment operator in the woods. He and his wife, Gretta, lived at Orofino. He enloyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing pool and was restoring a Model A Ford.
He was born June 3, 1920, at Ogema, Wis., the son of Robert and Bessie Matson. He moved with his family when he was 12 to Orofino vicinity, where he attended school.
He and Mary Blake were married Jan. 16, 1945, at Lewiston. She died in 1971. He married Gretta Green April 30, 1973, at Orofino, and she survives him at their home.
Survivors also include three sisters, Marie Evert and Betty Lyda of Orofino and Mary McKenzie of Boise; three brothers, Roy and Jerry of Orofino and Clarence of Hill City, S.D.; two stepdaughters, Joan Kroupa of Orofino and Diana Schoeffler of Lewiston; a stepson, Tom Green of Woodinville, Wash., and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Gilbert's Funeral Chapel at Orofino. The Rev. Samuel P. Harding, pastor of the Orofino Tabernacle, will officiate. Burial will follow at the Weseman Cemetery.
The family suggests that any memorials be made to the Clearwater Valley Hospital Auxiliary for the purchase of coronary care equipment.
